An AI readiness audit for a small business usually costs from a few hundred dollars to about $8,000, depending on how deeply someone examines your actual work. Caprock Agility's AI Readiness Audit is $2,500 and takes 3–5 business days. You get a workflow map, scored friction, an AI readiness view, and ranked opportunities.
If you're pricing an AI audit right now, you've probably noticed that the quotes don't line up. One firm charges a few hundred dollars, another charges thousands, and a free online quiz claims to do the same job. They're usually selling different things under the same name. This guide explains what the price tiers buy, exactly what our $2,500 audit includes, and when you shouldn't buy an audit at all.
How much does an AI readiness audit cost in 2026?
There's no official price list for this market, so the best guide is what providers publish. Two providers that sell audits themselves have written up the market. Both have a stake in the answer, so read these ranges as context, not a standard.
Applied Agency AI's 2026 pricing guide (updated July 16, 2026) breaks the market into these tiers:
| Tier | Typical price, per Applied Agency AI | What it usually is |
|---|---|---|
| Free self-assessment | $0 | An online questionnaire that scores your own answers |
| Productized SMB audit | $297 (their own offer) | Questionnaire, a 45-minute interview, and a written report |
| Boutique SMB engagement | $2,000–$8,000 | Interviews, a workflow review, and written recommendations |
| Mid-market audit | $5,000–$15,000 | 2–3 weeks, multiple stakeholders, a data infrastructure review |
| Enterprise assessment | $15,000–$50,000+ | Data platforms, governance, and org design across business units |
Reclaim ROI's small business assessment guide (updated May 9, 2026) puts a good assessment for a business under 50 employees at $1,500 to $5,000, taking three to fifteen days. It lists boutique consultancies at $10,000 to $25,000 and large strategy firms at $50,000 and up.
The two guides don't fully agree, which tells you something: the label "AI audit" covers everything from a quiz to a multi-month study. Compare what's delivered, not the name.
Why do AI audit prices vary so much?
In my experience, three things drive the price.
- Whether anyone looks at your actual work. A questionnaire can only score what you tell it. A real audit watches how a request moves from inbox to invoice and finds where it stalls. That takes senior time, and senior time is most of the cost.
- Scope. A 20-person company with a CRM, an accounting system, and a shared drive doesn't need its data platform or governance model assessed. A multi-location company might. More scope means more weeks.
- What the audit is really for. Some audits are priced low because they're the front door to a large implementation contract. That isn't wrong, but you should know whether the report is designed to stand on its own or to sell the next project.
What does Caprock Agility's $2,500 AI Readiness Audit include?
Our AI Readiness Audit is a workflow diagnostic, not a tool demo. It's $2,500 and takes 3–5 business days. Here's how it runs:
- Preparation and discovery. You share some background, then we have a 60–90 minute discovery conversation about where work slows down.
- Workflow mapping. We map how the work actually moves today, including the handoffs, the bottlenecks, and how your tools, data, and people support it.
- Scored friction. Each friction point is scored by severity, frequency, potential value, and feasibility. That keeps the conversation on business impact instead of on which AI tool is trending.
- AI readiness findings. You get an AI readiness view and risk flags, so you know what has to be fixed before automation will work.
- Ranked opportunities. Opportunities are ranked by business value, so you know what to fix first.
- A findings readout. We walk through everything in a 30–45 minute session and give you a clear recommendation for the next step.
You leave with a decision-ready findings summary. You can use it to choose an implementation path, to close readiness gaps first, or to decide to wait. It stands on its own. You don't have to hire us for anything else.
What's not included
Implementation, custom builds, and detailed automation architecture are separate from the audit. The audit tells you what's worth building. It doesn't build it.
Is there founder pricing?
Yes, for some clients. Through our Founder's Circle, for the first 10 qualified US businesses, founder pricing of $1,500 may be available. It isn't automatic. We confirm it after a free Workflow Fit Call. We look for a real workflow problem, a decision-maker in the conversation, a named internal champion for adoption, and a willingness to measure outcomes. Founder's Circle clients who move forward on a strong business case can also have the audit fee credited toward their EDGE engagement.
Is an AI readiness audit worth it for a small business?
It's worth it when the cost of guessing wrong is higher than the fee. For most small businesses, that's true sooner than they expect.
A fresh data point: in its Q3 2026 SMB AI Pulse report (October 12, 2026), Pax8 found that 35% of AI-engaged small businesses discovered AI running without approval in the past six months. Pax8 surveyed small business leaders in the US, UK, Germany, and Sweden. When AI is already showing up in your business without a plan, a map of where it should and shouldn't go starts to pay for itself.
An audit tends to be worth it when:
- You can feel the drag, such as slow follow-up, manual reporting, or disconnected tools, but you can't decide which problem to fix first.
- You're getting pitched AI tools and want an independent view before you buy.
- Your team is already using AI unevenly and you want a deliberate plan.
- You need a document you can show a partner, board, or lender to justify spending money.
When should you skip the audit?
Honestly, not every business needs one. Skip it, or wait, if:
- You already know the one workflow that's costing you. If one repetitive process eats hours every week and has a clear owner, go straight to EDGE Starter. It starts at $8,500 and runs 4–6 weeks. It includes its own baseline and a Day 30 outcomes review.
- Your problem isn't a workflow problem. If the real issue is pricing, hiring, or demand, AI won't fix it, and an audit will mostly tell you that.
- You won't act on the findings soon. A findings summary is most useful when someone is ready to own the next step.
If you're not sure, that's what the free first call is for.

What's the difference between a free AI assessment and a paid audit?
A free assessment scores your answers about yourself. A paid audit looks at how the work actually happens. Free tools are fine for orientation and worth 20 minutes. But they can't tell you that your quoting process is a better first fix than the chatbot you were considering, because they never see your quoting process.
Our free Workflow Fit Call sits in between. It's a real conversation, at no charge, about where work is slowing down and whether there's a workflow worth mapping. If there isn't a strong fit, we'll tell you. What it doesn't include is the deeper work: a full workflow map, an analysis of your actual workflow, a written ROI estimate or roadmap, or an on-site walkthrough. That's what the paid audit is for.
How to compare AI audit quotes
When you have quotes in hand, ask each provider the same questions:
- Will someone look at our real workflows, or only our answers to a form?
- What exactly do we receive, and can we act on it without hiring you?
- How are opportunities ranked: by business value, or by what you sell?
- What's excluded? Implementation, licenses, and integrations are often separate.
- What happens to the fee if we move forward? Some providers, including us for Founder's Circle clients, credit it toward implementation.
The cheapest quote isn't always the best value, and neither is the most expensive one. The right audit is the one that tells you clearly what to fix first, and why.
